24 November 2023
Original Preliminary Exam Cancelled

The preliminary examination originally scheduled for 11 February 2024 was cancelled by UPPSC due to unavoidable reasons — forcing all registered candidates to continue preparation for an indefinite period. A difficult phase for lakhs of aspirants who had invested months in preparation.

February 2024 — Cancelled
Preliminary Examination Re-Conducted

After a gap of approximately 18 months from the original scheduled date, UPPSC re-conducted the Preliminary Examination. This two-paper objective test (General Studies 140 marks + General Hindi 60 marks = 200 marks total, with ⅓ negative marking) served as the first qualifying stage. Shortlisted candidates were called for the Mains Examination.

27 July 2025
Mains Examination Conducted — Lucknow

The Mains Written Examination was held at centres in Lucknow district as per the revised schedule. Approximately 5,930 candidates appeared for the Mains exam across the two-day schedule. This is the primary merit-determining stage — comprising three papers including General Studies, General Hindi/General Sanskrit, and General Studies Paper-II, collectively worth 420 marks.

2 & 3 February 2026
Typing Test / Skill Test Conducted (ARO Posts)

The Hindi Typing Test — mandatory for ARO (Sahayak Samiksha Adhikari) posts — was conducted as a qualifying stage. Candidates needed a Hindi typing speed of 25 words per minute on a computer keyboard. This test does not add to the merit score but is mandatory to qualify for the final result.

📊 What the Numbers Tell Us About UPPSC RO/ARO 2023 Competition
  • Out of all candidates who appeared for the Mains exam (5,930 appeared), only 419 made the final merit list — a selection rate of approximately 7.1% from Mains-appearing candidates
  • Against 411 advertised vacancies, 419 candidates were provisionally selected — the additional 8 selections represent a standard buffer to accommodate potential DVP withdrawals or eligibility failures
  • The merit list is based exclusively on Mains examination marks (420 marks) — Prelims was qualifying, and typing test was qualifying. This means the entire competitive advantage came from Mains preparation quality
  • The cancellation and rescheduling of the original Prelims (2024 → 2025) tested candidate resilience over an exceptionally long preparation arc — those who stayed consistent throughout came out ahead

Review Officer / ARO): 81 candidates selected — 40 for UP Secretariat, 23 for Board of Revenue, 13 for UPPSC, and 1 for ARO (Accounts). The 8 extra selections (over 411 vacancies) are a standard buffer to account for potential rejections at Document Verification.
3

+
Anil Pandey emerged as the overall topper of the UPPSC Samiksha Adhikari / Sahayak Samiksha Adhikari (RO/ARO) Recruitment Examination 2023. Download and print the PDF for your records. Alternatively, you can login to the UPPSC Candidate Dashboard using your Registration Number and Date of Birth to check your individual selection status.
5
What is the salary of Review Officer (RO) and Assistant Review Officer (ARO)?
+
The pay scales under the 7th Pay Commission are: Samiksha Adhikari (Review Officer / RO): Pay Level 8 — basic pay ₹47,600 to ₹1,51,100 per month. Gross salary including Dearness Allowance, HRA, and other allowances is approximately ₹75,000–₹95,000+ per month at entry level. Sahayak Samiksha Adhikari (Asst. Review Officer / ARO): Pay Level 7 — basic pay ₹44,900 to ₹1,42,400 per month. Gross approximately ₹70,000–₹90,000+ per month at entry level. Both posts include UP Government service benefits — medical, LTC, pension (NPS), and potential government accommodation.
6
What is the next step after the UPPSC RO/ARO 2023 Final Result?
+
The next stage for all 419 provisionally selected candidates is Document Verification Process (DVP) at UPPSC, Prayagraj. The DVP date and detailed instructions will be announced on uppsc.up.nic.in — candidates must monitor the website daily. At DVP, candidates must produce all original certificates (educational qualification, caste certificate if applicable, DOB proof, graduation degree, 'O' Level for ARO, domicile certificate, etc.) along with self-attested photocopies. Critically, no new documents beyond those uploaded at application time are accepted at DVP. After successful DVP, the final appointment order is issued by the respective appointing departments.
7
Why were 419 candidates selected for 411 vacancies?
+
It is standard UPPSC practice to provisionally select a small number of candidates above the advertised vacancy count — in this case 8 additional candidates. This buffer serves a practical purpose: some provisionally selected candidates may be found ineligible during Document Verification (due to document discrepancies, false certificates, or failing to produce required originals), may withdraw voluntarily, or may become unavailable. By maintaining a small surplus in the merit list, the Commission ensures that all 411 vacancies are filled even if a few initial selections fall through. The final allocation to departments is done after DVP is completed for all provisionally selected candidates.
8
What happened to the original UPPSC RO/ARO 2023 Preliminary Exam that was cancelled?
+
The original Preliminary Examination for UPPSC RO/ARO 2023 was scheduled for 11 February 2024 but was cancelled by the Commission due to unavoidable administrative reasons. This cancellation extended the recruitment cycle by nearly 18 months, as candidates had to continue preparation for an indefinite period. The Commission subsequently rescheduled and conducted the re-examination on 27 July 2025 — more than a year and a half after the originally planned date. The Mains examination followed on 2 & 3 February 2026, and the final result was declared on 6 April 2026 — approximately 2.5 years after the original notification in October 2023.
9
When will UPPSC RO/ARO cut-off marks and individual scores be available?
+
The category-wise cut-off marks and individual candidate scores for the UPPSC RO/ARO 2023 examination will be made available on the Commission's official website uppsc.up.nic.in in due course — the Commission has stated this in the provisional result notice. There is no fixed date announced for when these will be published. Candidates should regularly visit the UPPSC website and check the "Results" section. Individual scores can also be checked through the UPPSC Candidate Dashboard using login credentials once they become available. Note that cut-off marks and scores are not provided under RTI during the active recruitment process as per UPPSC rules.
10
What if my name is not in the UPPSC RO/ARO 2023 Final Result?
+
If your roll number does not appear in the UPPSC RO/ARO 2023 Final Result PDF, it means you have not been selected in this recruitment cycle. Some practical steps: (1) Double-check your roll number — search the PDF carefully; sometimes candidates make typos while searching; (2) Wait for cut-off marks publication to understand how close you were to the merit threshold; (3) Prepare for UPPSC RO/ARO 2024/2025/2026 — UPPSC conducts this examination periodically and fresh vacancies will be notified; (4) The UPPSC RO/ARO examination is one of the most competitive in UP's administrative cadre — non-selection should be treated as a data point for refined preparation, not a permanent outcome. Your Mains preparation depth is a foundation for the next cycle.
11
What is the difference between Review Officer (RO) and Assistant Review Officer (ARO)?
+
Both are administrative officer positions in the UP Government's secretariat and related bodies, but with distinct seniority, pay, and role requirements: Review Officer (Samiksha Adhikari / RO): Pay Level 8 (₹47,600–₹1,51,100); requires only a graduation degree; handles review and examination of official files, drafting of correspondence, and administrative supervision in the Secretariat; no computer typing test required. Assistant Review Officer (Sahayak Samiksha Adhikari / ARO): Pay Level 7 (₹44,900–₹1,42,400); requires graduation plus 'O' Level / CCC Computer Certificate plus Hindi typing at 25 WPM; handles clerical-to-junior-officer level file work with computer skills; the ARO often works under the RO in the secretariat hierarchy. RO is the more senior position with higher starting pay.
12
In which departments will selected RO/ARO candidates be posted?
+
Selected candidates will be posted across four appointing organisations based on their category-wise merit and post preference: UP Secretariat (Sachivalaya), Lucknow — the largest employer with 322 RO posts and 40 ARO posts (362 posts total); this is the nerve centre of UP administration where officers work on government policy files across all state departments. Board of Revenue, UP — 3 RO posts and 23 ARO posts; handles revenue administration, land records, and appeals at the divisional level.
