03
How WCL Apprentice Merit List 2026 is Calculated

WCL's Trade Apprentice selection is entirely marks-based — no written test, no interview, no group discussion. The merit list is prepared using a straightforward averaging formula applied to your academic records. Understanding the formula helps you verify whether your name should appear in the list and how to estimate your rank.

Merit Score = (Matriculation / Class 10 Marks % + ITI Trade Certificate Marks %) ÷ 2
Applied to Trade Apprentice (ITI) positions — equal weightage to 10th marks and ITI trade marks. No bonus for higher qualifications.
📐 Detailed Merit Calculation Rules — WCL Trade Apprentice 2026
  • Class 10 (Matriculation) %: Total marks obtained across all subjects ÷ total maximum marks × 100. All subjects are counted — WCL does not use a best-of-5 calculation.
  • ITI Trade Certificate %: Overall marks from National Trade Certificate (NTC) or State Trade Certificate (STC) across all semesters ÷ maximum marks × 100. Both 1-year and 2-year ITI trades are covered depending on the trade applied for.
  • Trade-specific eligibility: Fitter — 2-year ITI | Electrician — 2-year ITI | Welder — 1-year ITI | COPA — 1-year ITI | Machinist — 2-year ITI | Turner — 2-year ITI | Mechanic (Diesel) — 2-year ITI | Security Guard (Optional) — Matric pass + physical parameters.
  • Graduate & Diploma Apprentices: For these categories (not applicable for Wani VTC list), merit is based on qualifying degree/diploma marks % only — ITI marks are not used.
  • Higher qualification disqualifies: Candidates possessing qualifications higher than the prescribed eligibility (e.g., a B.Tech holder applying for a Fitter trade) are summarily ineligible per WCL notification rules.
  • Date of Result must be on Marksheet: If the date of result declaration is not printed on the marksheet, a certificate from the Principal of the institute confirming the result date is mandatory at document verification.
  • Tie-breaking: In case of equal merit scores, WCL applies the tie-breaking rule as per the original notification — typically older candidate gets preference.
  • Area preference: Final placement within WCL is at the discretion of WCL management — candidates must be willing to train in any department of WCL during the apprenticeship period.
⚠️ Common Mistakes in WCL Merit Calculation
  • Applying with a qualification higher than required: A Diploma or Degree holder applying for ITI Trade Apprentice positions will be found ineligible and rejected at document verification — even if shortlisted provisionally.
  • Not registering on NAPS portal before applying: NAPS enrolment number is a mandatory field in WCL's application form. Without it, candidature is invalid.
  • Submitting incomplete ITI marksheets: Only the final certificate is insufficient. All semester/year marksheets are needed to compute ITI % accurately.
  • Using CGPA without converting to %: CGPA-based marksheets require conversion using the official conversion formula. Candidates must attach the conversion certificate from their board/institute.
📌 No Written Exam 📌 No Interview 📌 Higher Qualification = Ineligible 📌 NAPS Registration Mandatory 📌 All ITI Semester Sheets Required 📌 Area-wise Separate Lists

🚫 Common Reasons for Rejection at WCL Joining — Avoid These
  • Higher qualification than prescribed: B.Tech / Diploma holders applying for ITI trade positions are summarily ineligible per WCL rules — rejection is immediate even if shortlisted.
  • No NAPS registration: NAPS enrolment on apprenticeship.gov.in is mandatory. Without it, you cannot be formally engaged as an apprentice under the Apprentices Act.
  • Missing ITI semester marksheets: Carrying only the final ITI certificate without individual semester marksheets will result in marks not being verified — candidature may be rejected.
  • Indemnity Bond not signed by 2 witnesses: Format-1 requires the signature of 2 witnesses besides your own. An incompletely filled or unsigned bond is not acceptable.
  • Bank account not active: Stipend is transferred digitally. If your account is dormant or details are wrong, you will not receive your monthly stipend from Day 1.
  • OBC certificate in state format: WCL follows central government norms — only OBC certificates in central government format with "non-creamy layer" clause are accepted.
07
What Happens After Joining — Training Process at WCL

Once you report at GVTC Ghugus and your documents are verified, your one-year Trade Apprentice training begins under the Apprentices Act, 1961. Here is what the process looks like after you join.

🔄 Post-Joining Process — Step by Step
  • Document Verification: Original documents verified against your application. Any mismatch = immediate cancellation.
  • Medical Fitness Examination (IME): An Initial Medical Examination may be conducted at WCL's designated medical facility. Candidates found medically unfit for the trade cannot be engaged even after document verification.
  • Apprentice Contract Registration: Your apprenticeship contract is registered with the NAPS/BOAT (Board of Apprenticeship Training) portal by WCL. Your NAPS registration number is linked to this contract.
  • Work Diary (Format-3): From Day 1, you must maintain a Work Diary (Pro-forma of Work Diary, Format-3) recording the jobs/tasks done each week, countersigned by your supervisor. This is a mandatory record under Apprenticeship Act rules.
  • Stipend Payment: Monthly stipend (₹8,200–₹9,600 depending on trade category) is credited directly to your linked bank account by end of each month.
  • Trade Practical Training: Hands-on training at WCL's coal mining establishments — workshops, machinery maintenance units, surface operations, electrical installations, and other relevant departments.
  • Trade Test at Completion: At the end of 12 months, you appear for a Trade Test. Successful candidates receive the National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) from NCVT.
📌 Key Indemnity Bond clause: You undertake (a) you have NOT undergone apprentice training anywhere else after ITI, (b) you are NOT enrolled in any regular course currently and will NOT join any during training, (c) you accept WCL management's right to deploy you to any department. Violating these conditions can lead to cancellation of apprenticeship mid-training.

Frequently Asked Questions — WCL Apprentice Result 2026
Q1
Has the WCL Apprentice Result 2026 been officially released?
+
Yes — Western Coalfields Limited has officially released the WCL Apprentice Selected List 2026 for VTC Wani.

The provisional list was published on 13 March 2026 vide Notice No. VTC/WANI/145/2026. A total of 103 candidates have been shortlisted across 8 trades — COPA, Electrician, Fitter, Machinist, Mechanic (Diesel), Security Guard (Optional), Turner, and Welder (Gas & Electric) — for training at GVTC Ghugus under Wani Area, WCL.

The PDF is available at westerncoal.in → Career → Trade Apprentices and also via the direct link: docs.westerncoal.in/strapi/uploads/notice_VTC_WANI_145_2026_95686b1ef5.pdf

Note: WCL releases area-wise results separately. This result is for Wani Area only. Candidates from Nagpur, Chandrapur, Kanhan, and other areas must check their respective area notices on westerncoal.in.
Q2
How is the WCL Apprentice merit list calculated?
+
For Trade Apprentices (ITI category):

Merit Score = (Class 10 / Matriculation Marks % + ITI Trade Certificate Marks %) ÷ 2

Both components are weighted equally. All Class 10 subjects are counted (not best-5). All ITI semester marksheets are combined to compute ITI %. NCVT and SCVT are both valid.

For Graduate Apprentices: Merit is based on qualifying degree marks % only.
For Technician Apprentices: Merit is based on Diploma marks % only.

Key rules: No written exam. No interview. Higher qualification (Diploma/Degree) makes ITI trade applicants ineligible. NAPS registration is compulsory. Tie-break: older candidate wins. Area placement is at WCL management's discretion.
Q3
Where and when do selected candidates report for WCL Apprentice 2026 (Wani)?
+
Venue: GVTC (General Vocational Training Centre), Ghugus – 442505, Wani Area, WCL, Maharashtra

Reporting Schedule:
📅 19 March 2026 (Thu): COPA (27 candidates, Sl. 1–27) + Electrician Batch 1 (Sl. 28–35) — 09:30 AM
📅 20 March 2026 (Fri): Electrician Batch 2 (Sl. 36–45) + Fitter (Sl. 46–63) + Machinist (Sl. 64–68) + Mechanic Diesel Batch 1 (Sl. 69–71) — 09:30 AM
📅 21 March 2026 (Sat): Mechanic Diesel Batch 2 (Sl. 72–85) + Security Guard (Sl. 86–92) + Turner (Sl. 93–96) + Welder (Sl. 97–103) — 09:30 AM

Check your exact Sl. No. in the official Annex-A PDF to confirm your reporting date.
Q4
What is the Indemnity Bond and is it compulsory for WCL joining?
+
Yes — the Indemnity Bond (Format-1) is compulsory and must be submitted at GVTC Ghugus on your reporting day before you can formally join.

The Indemnity Bond is a WCL-specific legal document in which you declare that: (1) you have NOT undergone any apprentice training elsewhere after ITI, (2) you are NOT enrolled in any regular course currently and will not join one during training, (3) you accept WCL's right to deploy you to any department, (4) you will not claim any employment rights after training.

How to fill it: Download Format-1 from the official WCL notice PDF. Fill in your name, father's name, address, and offer letter details. Get signatures from 2 witnesses (name + address of each). Submit the original to the Office of the Area Training Officer, Wani Area, WCL, Ghugus – 442505 on joining day.
Q5
What is the monthly stipend for WCL Trade Apprentices in 2026?
+
The monthly stipend for WCL Trade Apprentices (ITI category) for the 1-year training period ranges from ₹8,200 to ₹9,600 per month as per the Apprenticeship Act prescribed rates set by the Government of India.

The stipend is credited directly to the apprentice's bank account each month using the account details filled in the Joining Report (Format-2). Ensure your savings account is active, linked to your Aadhaar, and details are accurate before joining Day 1.

In addition to the stipend, WCL provides access to its medical facilities (at WCL hospitals in the Wani/Ghugus area) during the training period.
Q6
Is WCL Apprenticeship a permanent government job?
+
No — WCL Apprenticeship is a 1-year contractual training programme under the Apprentices Act, 1961. It is not a permanent government job.

The Indemnity Bond itself states: "I am fully aware that this Apprenticeship training facility is extended to me as per the provisions of Apprenticeship Act 1961, and will not entitle me to any claim for employment or otherwise."

However, completing WCL apprenticeship gives you significant long-term advantages:
✅ National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) from NCVT — nationally recognised
✅ 1-year PSU work experience on your CV — valued in Coal India, Railways, BHEL, NTPC
✅ CCAA/NAC unlocks 20% Group D Railway quota + PET exemption + 1/3 marks bonus in RRC Level-1
✅ Internal preference in future WCL/Coal India ITI-level recruitment drives
Q7
My name is not in the VTC Wani list. Can I still be selected in WCL Apprentice 2026?
+
Yes — WCL releases area-wise selected lists separately and this Wani VTC result covers only the Wani Area intake.

If you applied for other WCL areas, check the respective area notices on westerncoal.in → Career → Trade Apprentices. Active results for other areas include notices for Nagpur, Chandrapur, Ballarpur, Kanhan, Pathakhera, and others — these are released as separate PDFs.

Also note that WCL's overall 2025-26 apprentice recruitment has 1,213 total seats across all areas. Results are staggered — if your area's list is not yet uploaded, it may still be forthcoming. Bookmark the WCL website and check regularly.
Q8
What is NAPS and why is NAPS registration mandatory for WCL apprenticeship?
+
NAPS stands for National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme — a Government of India initiative managed by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship at apprenticeship.gov.in.

NAPS registration is mandatory for all Trade Apprentices (ITI holders) engaging under the Apprentices Act, 1961 because:
1. The apprenticeship contract between the employer (WCL) and the apprentice must be registered on the NAPS portal as required by law
