Frequently Asked Questions
SBI PO 2026 — Advt. CRPD/PO/2026-27/09 — all key queries answered
What is the SBI PO post and why is it considered one of India's most prestigious banking careers?+
Probationary Officer (PO) is the entry-level management position at State Bank of India — India's largest public sector bank and most trusted financial institution with thousands of branches and a global presence. Selected candidates join as POs in Junior Management Grade Scale-I (JMGS-I) and, after a 2-year probation, are confirmed as permanent officers. SBI POs have access to leadership roles from day one — managing branches, credit teams, digital operations, and customer relationships. The role offers accelerated career progression, international postings, attractive pay and perks, job security, and the prestige of being part of India's most powerful banking institution — making it one of the most sought-after government job opportunities in the country.
What are the total vacancies and category-wise distribution for SBI PO 2026?+
SBI PO 2026 has 1500 total vacancies — comprising 1446 regular and 54 backlog posts. Category-wise: UR: 588, OBC (NCL): 390, SC: 234 (including 18 backlog), EWS: 144, ST: 144 (including 36 backlog). In addition, 4% horizontal reservation is provided for PwBD candidates — VI: 15, HI: 16, LD: 14, d&e (ASD-Mild, Mental Illness, Multiple): 16 — total 61 PwBD posts. Vacancies are provisional and may be revised before final selection. OBC candidates in the creamy layer must apply as UR. EWS certificate must be based on FY 2025–26 income.
What is the qualification required for SBI PO 2026?+
Graduation in any discipline from a recognised university or equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government. There is no minimum percentage requirement — any passing grade in graduation is acceptable. Professional qualifications like Medical, Engineering, Chartered Accountant (CA), Cost Accountant (CMA) are also eligible. Final-year/semester students may apply provisionally — but if shortlisted for interview, they must produce proof of passing graduation on or before 30 September 2026. The date of passing is the date appearing on the mark sheet / provisional certificate, or the date the result was officially posted on the university's website.
What is the 3-phase selection process and how is the final merit calculated?+
Selection is through 3 phases: Phase-I (Preliminary Exam) — 100 MCQs, 100 marks, 1 hour, 3 sections — used only for shortlisting approx. 10× vacancies per category for Mains — Phase-I marks are NOT counted in final merit. Phase-II (Main Exam) — 170 Qs Objective (200 marks) + Descriptive Paper 3 Qs (30 marks) — total 230 marks, 3.5 hours — sectional cut-offs apply — shortlists approx. 3× vacancies for Phase-III. Phase-III — Psychometric Test (personality profiling, mandatory, not scored) + Group Exercise (20 marks) + Personal Interview (30 marks) — 50 marks total. Final merit = Phase-II normalised to 75 marks + Phase-III normalised to 25 marks = 100 marks. Both Phase-II and Phase-III must be qualified separately — failing either disqualifies the candidate.
What is the exact pay and what are the total benefits of the SBI PO post?+
Starting basic pay is ₹48,480/month (including 4 advance increments) in the JMGS-I scale of 48480-2000/7-62480-2340/2-67160-2680/7-85920. Total approximate CTC at Mumbai centre is ₹21.97 Lacs per annum. Beyond basic pay, SBI POs receive: Dearness Allowance (DA) — revised quarterly; HRA / CCA / Lease facility based on posting city; National Pension System (NPS) — contributory pension; Leave Fare Concession (LFC); Medical Benefits — comprehensive coverage for employee and family; Subsidised employee loan rates for personal/home/vehicle loans; Travel reimbursement for interview (Railway AC-III, shortest route). Gross monthly in-hand at entry level in a metro city is approximately ₹85,000–95,000 including all allowances.
What is the application fee and who is exempted?+
The application fee is ₹750 for UR, EWS, and OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates. SC, ST, and PwBD candidates are completely exempted — fee is NIL. Payment is through the online portal only — Debit Card, Credit Card, Internet Banking, or UPI. Transaction charges, if any, are borne by the candidate. The fee is completely non-refundable — not held in reserve for any future SBI exam — under no circumstances. Candidates submitting multiple applications have fees for all except the last valid application forfeited.
How many attempts are allowed and does appearing in Prelims count as a chance?+
The maximum permissible attempts (chances) are: UR/EWS: 6 chances; OBC/OBC(PwBD)/UR(PwBD)/EWS(PwBD): 9 chances; SC/SC(PwBD)/ST/ST(PwBD): No restriction. Critically: appearing in the Main Examination counts as one chance — but appearing in the Preliminary Examination does NOT count as a chance. In years where only one examination was held (no separate Prelims), appearing in that single exam counts as a chance. Candidates who have exhausted their maximum permissible chances are NOT eligible to apply for SBI PO 2026.
What is the service bond condition for SBI POs?+
All selected SBI PO candidates must execute a Bond of ₹2,00,000 (Two Lakh Rupees) at the time of joining. This bond commits the officer to serve SBI for a minimum period of 3 years from the date of joining. If a PO resigns or leaves SBI service before completing 3 years, the full bond amount of ₹2 Lakhs is invoked and must be paid to the Bank. The bond is a standard condition for all PO joiners and is aimed at ensuring a minimum period of service given the significant training investment made by SBI. There is no restriction on leaving after 3 years.
What is the CIBIL/credit history requirement for SBI PO candidates?+
SBI checks the CIBIL (credit information) status of all candidates at the time of joining. Candidates who have defaulted in repayment of loans, credit card dues, or any lending arrangement with Banks/NBFCs/Financial Institutions must regularise/repay all outstanding dues on or before the date of joining. If the CIBIL status has not been updated by the date of joining despite repayment, the candidate must either get the status updated or provide NOCs from the concerned lenders confirming no outstanding dues. Failure to regularise or provide proof makes the candidate ineligible for appointment, and the offer letter is withdrawn/cancelled. Candidates are strongly advised to check their CIBIL score before applying.
What are the OBC and EWS certificate validity requirements for SBI PO 2026?+
For OBC (NCL) candidates: The OBC Non-Creamy Layer certificate must be issued on or after 01 April 2026 and in the GoI prescribed format (containing the non-creamy layer clause). It must be produced at the time of document verification at the interview. Older OBC certificates or certificates without the NCL clause are not valid. Creamy layer OBC candidates must apply as UR. For EWS candidates: The Income & Asset Certificate must be issued by a Competent Authority in the GoI prescribed format — based on gross annual income for FY 2025–26 and valid for FY 2026–27. Both certificates must be produced at document verification — failure to produce valid certificates = not allowed in interview + not considered for appointment.
