The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), established under Article 315 of the Indian Constitution, is India's premier central recruiting agency. Its flagship examination — the Civil Services Examination (CSE) — is widely regarded as the most challenging competitive examination in India. Every year, over 10 lakh candidates apply, approximately 5–6 lakh appear for Prelims, around 13,000–15,000 clear to Mains, and fewer than 3,000 appear for the Interview — out of which only approximately 1,000 make the final merit list. The selection ratio is under 0.1% of applicants.
The examination tests candidates across a vast canvas: Indian history, polity, geography, economy, science, environment, ethics, essay writing, optional subject depth, and the interpersonal dimension of the personality test. The three-stage process — Prelims (qualifying), Mains (merit-based, 1,750 marks), and Interview (275 marks) — spans over 12–14 months per cycle. How does service allocation work after UPSC CSE 2025 results?

Service allocation is based on four factors: All India Rank, service preference submitted by the candidate, category, and available vacancies per service. Broadly:
— Candidates in roughly ranks 1–180 (General category) who prefer IAS typically receive IAS allocation
— IPS allocation follows next (~ranks 181–330 approx.)
— IFS (Foreign Service) occupies a premium among Group A services; 55 vacancies
— IRS, IRTS, IDAS, IPoS and other services fill the remaining ranks
— Reserve list candidates are called only if original candidates decline, fail medical, or cannot be verified
The DoPT (Department of Personnel & Training) handles allocation and sends appointment orders after document verification and medical examination.

What is the UPSC IFS Mains 2025 result (different from IFS Final Result 2025)?

The UPSC IFS Mains Result 2025 (for the 2025 exam cycle — a separate, more recent cycle) was declared on 24 February 2026. The IFS Mains 2025 was held from 16–23 November 2025. A total of 372 candidates have been shortlisted for the IFS Personality Test / Interview stage. This is distinct from the IFS Final Result 2025 (declared 19 May 2025) which covered the 2024 exam cycle. Shortlisted candidates must complete the mandatory 15-day OAF update window — non-compliance leads to disqualification. Interviews for IFS 2025 will be held at UPSC Dholpur House, New Delhi. The IFS 2025 final result is expected in mid-2026.
