Candidates can apply for only one post from the six advertised. Applying for multiple posts will result in rejection of all applications. If you hold a Diploma in Engineering, you are eligible for SC/TO or JE posts but not Maintainer posts even if you also have ITI — the Diploma is considered as a higher qualification and does not substitute for ITI where ITI is specifically required. Degree holders in specified Engineering disciplines are also eligible for posts where Diploma is the minimum qualification.

- LASIK surgery disqualification: Candidates who have undergone LASIK surgery are not eligible for any post in GMRCL — this is a blanket disqualification, including for Maintainer posts which require B-1 medical standard
- No disability posts: These technical posts are not available for Persons with Disabilities (PwD) — all posts require specific medical fitness standards as per Indian Railway Medical Manual
- Only willing to serve anywhere in Gujarat: Candidates must be willing to be posted at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, or any other current or future GMRCL project anywhere in Gujarat
- ITI is not equivalent to Diploma for Maintainer posts: If you hold a Diploma, you may be eligible for SC/TO or JE — but Diploma does not satisfy the ITI requirement for Maintainer posts. You must have the specific ITI trade as required per post
- PSU/Government employees: Candidates currently employed in any Govt. or PSU organisation must produce an NOC from their employer at the time of document verification — without this, candidature is not considered

- SC/TO and JE candidates must execute a surety bond of ₹2,50,000 — this means you must serve GMRCL for a minimum of 3 years (excluding LWP/EOL periods). Leaving before 3 years means the bond amount is forfeited.
- Maintainer candidates must execute a surety bond of ₹1,25,000 with the same 3-year minimum service commitment.
- A 3-month prior written notice or leave salary in lieu of notice is required before resignation. GMRCL may refuse to accept resignation during disciplinary proceedings or operational exigencies.
- The surety bond applies across the 2-year training period and beyond — the 3-year minimum service clock starts from joining date.
The Gujarati Language section in the written test is qualifying in nature only — its marks are NOT included in the merit cutoff score. However, candidates must score a minimum of 60% (General) or 50% (SC/ST/SEBC/EWS) in the Gujarati section to be eligible for the next stage. If you fail the Gujarati minimum, you are eliminated regardless of how well you scored in other sections. Additionally, if you don't know an answer, you can mark Option E — this is treated as an attempt but does not attract negative marking, unlike leaving it blank.
For SC/TO (NE-001) and Junior Engineers (NE-002, NE-003) — 120 Questions:
| Section | Questions | Marks | Counted in Merit? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technical Knowledge | 40 | 40 | Yes |
| Gujarati Language | 20 | 20 | Qualifying Only (60%/50%) |
| Logical Ability & Reasoning | 20 | 20 | Yes |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 20 | 20 | Yes |
| General English | 20 | 20 | Yes |
| Total (SC/TO & JE) | 120 | 120 marks | 100 marks count for merit (excl. Gujarati) |
For Maintainers (NE-004, NE-005, NE-006) — 100 Questions:
| Section | Questions | Marks | Counted in Merit? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technical Knowledge | 40 | 40 | Yes |
| Gujarati Language | 20 | 20 | Qualifying Only (60%/50%) |
| Logical Ability & Reasoning | 15 | 15 | Yes |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 10 | 10 | Yes |
| General English | 15 | 15 | Yes |
| Total (Maintainers) | 100 | 100 marks | 80 marks count for merit (excl. Gujarati) |
| All questions must be attempted — leaving any question unattempted invites a negative marking of 0.25 marks. Use Option E on the OMR sheet for questions you are unsure about — this avoids the negative marking penalty. Exam venue is at major cities in Gujarat only. | |||
Stage 1 — Written Test (All Posts)
An OMR-based MCQ written test in English, conducted at major cities across Gujarat. SC/TO and JE candidates attempt 120 questions; Maintainers attempt 100 questions. Duration is 120 minutes for all. Negative marking of 0.25 applies for wrong answers and genuinely unattempted questions — use Option E to avoid penalty on uncertain questions. Gujarati section must be cleared separately (60% for General, 50% for reserved). Merit in written test determines shortlisting for the next stage.
Stage 2 — Psychometric / Aptitude Test (SC/TO Only)
Candidates shortlisted for the Station Controller/Train Operator (SC/TO) post must additionally appear for a Psychometric Aptitude Test — an assessment of mental fitness, situational awareness, attention to detail, and psychological suitability for train operation duties. This stage is critical because SC/TO is a safety-critical role and GMRCL needs to ensure candidates can perform reliably under operational pressure. JE and Maintainer candidates skip this stage entirely. Shortlisting ratio for this test is decided by GMRCL.
Stage 3 — Document Verification
Candidates shortlisted based on merit in the written test (and psychometric test for SC/TO) are called for checking of original certificates — education qualifications, ITI/Diploma marksheets, caste certificate, domicile proof, Aadhaar, NOC from current employer (if in Govt./PSU), and any other documents as notified. Credentials are also verified with the respective universities and authorities. Any discrepancy results in immediate disqualification.
Stage 4 — Medical Examination
All shortlisted candidates must pass a medical fitness examination per the standards used in Indian Railways for equivalent categories. SC/TO candidates require Aye-One (A-1) standard including naked vision of 6/6. JE candidates require A-1 (not below A-3). Maintainer candidates require Bee-One (B-1) standard. The Medical Board is constituted and headed by the Civil Surgeon at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and various districts. GMRCL bears the cost of the first examination only — if a second examination is required, the candidate pays. Medically unfit candidates are not eligible for any position in GMRCL.
All selected candidates are placed on a 2-year Training cum Probation period that includes classroom training, technical training, and on-the-job training as per GMRCL's curriculum. During this period, candidates must pass various internal examinations. The training period pay is the stipend (₹18,000 for SC/TO & JE; ₹14,000 for Maintainers). Upon successful completion of training and all examinations, candidates are placed on a 5-year contract at IDA pay scales. Unsatisfactory performance during training can result in termination. GMRCL retains the right to adjust the training duration at its discretion.
