On successful completion of the 4-year B.Tech course at Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, all cadets are commissioned as Sub Lieutenants in the Indian Navy with Permanent Commission in the Technical Branch. They are assigned to ships, submarines, or shore establishments based on their branch (Mechanical or E&C). The commissioned officers are then deputed for further specialised technical training before taking up their operational assignments in the fleet.
| Criteria | Details |
|---|---|
| Nationality | Indian citizen only — as per nationality conditions laid down by the Government of India |
| Marital Status | Unmarried — both male and female candidates must be unmarried at the time of application and throughout the training period. Candidates who marry after selection but before/during training will be discharged and required to refund full training cost including pay, allowances, and all government expenditure. |
| Age (Date of Birth) | Must be born between 02 July 2007 and 01 January 2010 (both dates inclusive) — no relaxation in age limit for any category |
| Educational Qualification | Must have passed the 10+2 (Senior Secondary) examination or equivalent with minimum 70% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) combined — AND — minimum 50% marks in English either in Class X or Class XII (whichever is higher) |
| JEE (Main) 2026 — Mandatory | Candidate must have appeared for JEE (Main) 2026 (B.E./B.Tech paper). Shortlisting for SSB is done based on JEE Main 2026 Common Rank List (CRL). Candidates who did not appear for JEE Main 2026 are not eligible regardless of their academic scores. |
| Gender | Both male and female candidates are eligible. Maximum 08 vacancies are reserved for women (04 per branch) |
| Class 12 Board | Must be from a recognised Board (CBSE / ICSE / State Boards) — results must be declared — candidates awaiting results are not eligible |
- JEE Main 2026 is compulsory — not just having a good score, but having appeared in it. No JEE Main = no eligibility, regardless of academic marks.
- 70% in PCM means aggregate of all 3 subjects — not individually. Physics 60 + Chemistry 60 + Maths 90 = 210/300 = 70% — this would qualify. Verify your exact PCM aggregate from your marksheet.
- English 50% can be from either Class 10 or Class 12 — whichever is higher — this gives flexibility to candidates who scored poorly in English in one class
- No age relaxation of any kind — the age band is strictly 02 July 2007 to 01 January 2010 for all candidates
- Submitting multiple applications leads to cancellation of all applications — apply only once with correct details
- Candidates already declared medically fit for NDA/INA January 2027 need not repeat the medical examination for this entry

Stage 1 — JEE (Main) 2026 CRL-based Shortlisting
Applications are screened for eligibility (age, PCM%, English%, JEE appearance). Eligible candidates are shortlisted for SSB interview based on their JEE (Main) 2026 Common Rank List (CRL) score — the higher your JEE rank, the better your chance of SSB shortlisting. Shortlisted candidates are informed via registered email only — a call letter is generated on joinindiannavy.gov.in. The number shortlisted for SSB is several times the number of vacancies, as not all SSB candidates qualify.
Stage 2 — SSB Interview (5-Day Procedure)
The SSB (Services Selection Board) interview is a 5-day comprehensive assessment at one of four centres: Bengaluru, Bhopal, Kolkata, or Visakhapatnam. Day 1 is screening (OIR + PPDT) — those who don't clear screening are sent back. Days 2–5 consist of Psychological Tests (TAT, WAT, SRT, SD), Group Testing Officer Tasks (GTO — Outdoor tasks including group discussion, command task, lecturette, individual obstacles), and a Personal Interview by a Senior Officer. The SSB assesses Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) — 15 qualities across 4 dimensions (Effective Intelligence, Social Adaptability, Dynamic, Morale). The SSB is conducted tentatively from September 2026 onwards.
Stage 3 — Medical Examination
All SSB-recommended candidates (those who receive a Recommended letter from the SSB board president) must appear for a medical examination at a designated Service Hospital. Medical standards are stringent — they cover vision (far/near/colour), height-weight proportionality, hearing, dental, and overall physical fitness. No relaxation on any medical standard is possible under any circumstances. Candidates declared medically fit for NDA/INA January 2027 need not repeat the medical for this entry — their previous result is accepted.
Stage 4 — Police & Character Verification
Provisionally selected candidates (medically fit + SSB recommended) are subject to police verification of antecedents through local police authorities at their home district. This is a standard background check for all defence recruitments. Any adverse police report or character verification discrepancy can lead to withdrawal of candidature even at this late stage.
Stage 5 — Final Merit List & Appointment
A final merit list is drawn up based on SSB interview marks, medical fitness, and police verification clearance. Candidates are offered appointment against available vacancies in order of merit. Selected cadets report to Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala, Kerala in January 2027 for commencement of the 4-year B.Tech programme. All training costs are borne by the government from day one.
- The SSB tests your personality, leadership, and intellect — not book knowledge. Start preparation at least 6 months before the likely SSB date
- Study 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) and practice reflecting them naturally in group tasks, discussions, and personal interview
- Practice WAT (Word Association Test), TAT (Thematic Apperception Test), SRT (Situation Reaction Test), and Self Description — these require genuine self-awareness, not mugged-up answers
- Physical fitness is tested indirectly through GTO outdoor tasks — candidates must be fit enough for obstacle courses, command tasks, and group physical activities
- SSB success rate is low — most candidates attend 2–3 SSBs before clearing it. Starting early gives you multiple chances across different defence entries
| Medical Parameter | Male Requirement | Female Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Height | Minimum 157 cm | Minimum 152 cm |
| Weight | Proportionate to height and age — as per Navy standards | Proportionate to height and age |
| Eyesight (Distant) | 6/6 in better eye and 6/9 in worse eye — uncorrected (Spectacles NOT permitted in this entry) | Same as male |
| Corrected Vision (if applicable) | Not generally permissible for this entry — check latest notification for updated vision standards | — |
| Colour Vision | CP-1 (Normal colour perception) — must be able to distinguish all standard colours | CP-1 |
| Hearing | Normal — no hearing impairment | Normal |
| Dental | Should have sufficient natural teeth — no major dental issues | Same |
| Tattoos | Permanent body tattoos are not permitted except small tattoos on inner forearm (religious/traditional) — verify from official notification | Same |
| Medical standards are extremely stringent for Naval officer entries. Candidates with spectacles or contact lenses may face issues — read the detailed medical standards on joinindiannavy.gov.in before applying. No request for change of medical centre or hospital is entertained under any circumstances. | ||
If you have already been declared medically fit for NDA (Naval Academy) / INA January 2027 course through another entry, you are not required to appear for a fresh medical examination for this 10+2 B.Tech entry. Your existing medical fitness certificate from the designated Service Hospital will be accepted. However, if you were declared temporary/permanent unfit, those results stand — no fresh medical is conducted for appeals.

Fill Application Form — All Details Carefully
Fill personal details, educational qualifications (Class 10, Class 12 PCM%, English%), JEE (Main) 2026 Roll Number and score, and select your preferred engineering branch (Mechanical or E&C). Double-check all entries before proceeding. Incorrect JEE Roll Number or incorrect marks will affect shortlisting — the Navy verifies JEE data from NTA records.
Upload Photograph & Signature
