What Exactly Is the NSRY Kochi Apprenticeship — And Is It Worth It?

Every year, thousands of ITI graduates wonder what to do with their trade certificate. Private workshops pay less than expected, and government jobs are highly competitive. The Naval Ship Repair Yard (NSRY) Apprenticeship at Kochi is one answer that genuinely stands out — but most candidates don't fully understand what they're getting into when they apply.

NSRY Kochi is one of the Indian Navy's largest and busiest repair facilities, operating within the Naval Base on the Kochi coast. Alongside it, the Naval Aircraft Yard (NAY) Kochi handles maintenance and overhaul of naval aircraft and helicopters. Together, these two establishments have 240 apprentice seats for the 2026 batch across 21 trades ranging from Fitter and Electrician to Shipwright, Secretariat Assistant, and COPA.

The training runs under the Apprentices Act, 1961. On completion, the government issues you a National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) from NCVT — a nationally recognised qualification that several government departments and PSUs specifically value during technical recruitment.

Throughout training — typically one to two years depending on trade — you receive a monthly stipend from MSDE. You work inside an active naval facility on real equipment, real repairs, and real technical problems, not simulations.

What this recruitment is NOT

It's important to be clear: completing this apprenticeship does not automatically give you a Navy job. The Navy is under no legal obligation to absorb apprentices after training ends. Go in with realistic expectations — the value here is the certificate, the training quality, and the experience, not job certainty.

💡 Why NSRY Kochi Is Particularly Valuable

Unlike ITI apprenticeships at small workshops, a naval yard apprenticeship means working with advanced, precision-grade machinery. A Fitter apprentice at NSRY Kochi works on components that go into warships and submarines — tolerances and work standards are significantly higher than in most civilian workshops.

This makes NSRY-trained NAC holders more competitive in future technical recruitment — whether for a Tradesman Mate post in the Navy, a PSU technician exam, or skilled work in the defence private sector.

Trade-wise Vacancy Breakdown — All 21 Trades

The 240 posts are spread unevenly across 21 trades. More seats means better odds; fewer seats means intense competition even with high marks. Fitter (31) and Electrician (29) are the largest trades — also the most applied-for. Foundry Man has just 1 seat. Know where you realistically stand before deciding which trade to apply under.

Eligibility Criteria — Read This Carefully Before Applying

Many candidates get rejected not because of age or category issues but because they misread the marks requirement. There are two separate minimum marks thresholds — one for Class 10 and one for ITI — and both must be met simultaneously.

🇮🇳
Nationality
Must be an Indian Citizen as per the Apprentices Act, 1961 and applicable GoI rules.
🎂
Age Limit — A Genuinely Relaxed Rule in 2026
Minimum 18 years as on 01 June 2026. No upper age limit — per MSDE OM No. F.No. MSDE-14(03)/2021 AP-PMU dated 20 Dec 2021. Whether you are 25, 30, or older, you are eligible as long as you meet all other criteria.
📚
Class 10 / Matriculation Marks
Must have passed Matriculation/Class X from a recognised board with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks. Below 50% means ineligible regardless of ITI score.
🎓
ITI Qualification — The Most Critical Requirement
Must hold ITI Certificate (NCVT) in the specific trade applied for with a minimum 65% aggregate marks. A Provisional National Trade Certificate is also accepted for recent ITI pass-outs awaiting the original certificate.
🏅
Category Preferences & Special Quotas
SC / ST / OBC — as per MSDE norms.
Physically Handicapped — 3% reservation.
Sons/Daughters of Ex-Servicemen / Armed Forces Personnel — preference.
Sons/Daughters of Defence Civilians / Naval Dockyard Employees — preference.
🏥
Medical Fitness
Shortlisted candidates must pass a medical exam at Naval Base Kochi conducted by naval medical officers. The exact date is communicated via call-up letter.
⛔ Who Should Not Apply
  • Anyone who has already completed or is currently doing an apprenticeship anywhere in India under the Apprentices Act, 1961.
  • Candidates whose ITI aggregate falls below 65% even if they meet all other criteria.
  • Candidates who scored below 50% in Class 10.
  • Anyone below 18 years as on 01 June 2026.
  • Candidates whose ITI trade does not match the trade they are applying for.

NSRY Kochi vs Other Apprenticeships — How Does It Compare?

Naval apprenticeships operate under tighter discipline and higher technical standards — which makes them harder to get and more demanding, but also more valuable on your CV.

How Candidates Are Selected — The Entire Process Explained

Your merit rank is determined by the aggregate percentage of your SSC and ITI marks combined. No written exam, no group discussion. The document verification and interview happen only after shortlisting — and at that stage, it's essentially a formality to confirm your documents are genuine and you are medically fit.

A candidate with 72% ITI but 48% SSC is not eligible at all. A candidate with 75% ITI and 60% SSC ranks higher than someone with 70% ITI and 55% SSC. Both scores matter — don't ignore either.

1

07

Monthly Stipend — What You Actually Receive

The stipend is fixed by MSDE — it is a training allowance, not a salary. No accommodation is provided. If you are coming from another state, factor in the cost of renting near Naval Base Kochi before committing.

ITI Trade Apprentice — Year 1
₹7,700
per month (approx.)
All 21 designated trade apprentices, first year, per current MSDE stipend norms.
ITI Trade Apprentice — Year 2
₹8,050
per month (approx.)
For 2-year trades (Fitter, Electrician, Welder, etc.). Modest increment in second year under MSDE rules.
After Training — Expected Salary Range
₹20K+
monthly (if placed in govt/PSU role)
NAC holders in govt technical jobs (Tradesman Mate, PSU technician) typically start at Pay Level 2–3 with take-home ₹20,000–₹30,000 before allowances.
💡 Stipend figures reflect current MSDE rates and may be revised. No HRA, TA/DA, or medical benefits during apprenticeship. Confirm exact rates from NSRY ATS or msde.gov.in at the time of enrolment.

Tips That Can Genuinely Make a Difference

✅ Practical Advice — Not the Usual Generic List
  • Post today — not on the last date. Speed Post to Kochi takes 4–7 working days from most cities. Every day you wait is a risk you don't need to take.
  • Minimum marks ≠ competitive marks. For Fitter (31 posts) and Electrician (29 posts), candidates with under 75% ITI rarely make the shortlist. Be honest about where you stand.
  • Include NCC / sports certificates. The application form has fields for these — the selection committee looks at them. They may help in tie-breaking situations.
  • Verify your certificate is NCVT, not SCVT. The notification requires NCVT marks sheet. If yours is SCVT, call 0484-2874356 before applying.
  • Fill both parent mobile numbers. Many candidates skip these fields on the form. Fill every available field to avoid administrative rejection for incomplete applications.
  • Keep your email active through September 2026. Call-up letters may arrive by email. Use an ID you actually check regularly.
  • Think beyond the stipend. Your NAC opens future doors — Tradesman Mate exam, PSU ITI recruitment, Central Government Skilled Worker recruitment all value NAC holders. It's an investment in your next application, not just two years of training.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are 240 vacancies total, spread across two establishments — Naval Ship Repair Yard Kochi (NSRY Koc) and Naval Aircraft Yard Kochi (NAY Koc). Both are within the Indian Navy's main base on the Kochi coast in Kerala. The ATS office manages both under a single application process.

No written examination of any kind. Shortlisting is based purely on the aggregate percentage of your SSC (Class 10) and ITI final examination marks. You appear at NSRY Kochi only after being shortlisted — and even then it's document verification and a medical test, not an academic exam.

It will not be considered. Late applications are rejected without exception or appeal. This is why posting at least 7 working days before the deadline is critical. NSRY Kochi does not grant extensions for postal delays.

The notification specifies NCVT marks sheet. SCVT is a state-level certification not automatically equivalent. Some NSRY batches in the past have accepted SCVT with supporting documentation. The safest approach: call 0484-2874356 and confirm before posting your application. Don't assume either way.

Not at all. The 2026 notification has no upper age limit — you only need to be above 18 years as on 01 June 2026. Whether you are 19 or 39, you are eligible as long as your educational qualifications meet the criteria.

No — and this is stated plainly in the official notification. Completing the apprenticeship does not entitle you to a Navy job. What you receive is an NCVT National Apprenticeship Certificate, which you can use for future government or private sector technical roles. The Navy is under no obligation to hire you after training ends.

Each candidate should apply for the trade in which they hold their ITI certificate. If you hold ITI in two different NCVT trades, you could potentially send two separate applications — but this is not explicitly addressed in the notification. Contact 0484-2874356 for clarity before doing so.

No accommodation is provided. You need to arrange your own housing near Kochi. The Naval Base is in the Willingdon Island / Fort Kochi area — rental accommodation is available in Ernakulam, Kaloor, and Kakkanad. Factor this cost into your planning if you are coming from another state.

The official contact number for the Apprentice Training School, NSRY Kochi is 0484-2874356. Call during government office hours (Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM) for any queries about eligibility, documents, or the application process.
