With approximately 48.83 lakh candidates registered — making SSC GD 2026 one of India's largest competitive exams — a single window would be logistically impossible. The 4-window approach distributes candidates over 4 weeks with 4 daily shifts, allowing SSC to manage exam security, invigilation quality, and centre logistics effectively. Normalisation of scores across windows will ensure fairness in the final merit list.

Exam Week Preference Window — How It Works
11 April (3 PM) – 15 April (5 PM) 2026 — Login to ssc.gov.in and choose your preferred week
📝
What is the Preference Window?
SSC has introduced a candidate-friendly system where registered applicants can log in to ssc.gov.in and rank their preferred exam windows (1 to 4). This helps SSC factor in candidate convenience while allocating exam slots. You must rank all 4 windows in order of preference — not selecting all options may lead to complications.
📅
Window Open: 11 April 2026 (3:00 PM) — Closes: 15 April 2026 (5:00 PM)
The preference window is time-limited. It opens on 11 April 2026 at 3:00 PM and closes on 15 April 2026 at 5:00 PM. Do not wait for the last day — heavy server load near the deadline may cause technical issues. Submit your preferences as early as possible.
📌
What If You Don't Submit Preferences?
If you fail to log in and submit preferences within the window, SSC will automatically allot an exam slot based on available capacity. You will not be able to change this auto-allotted slot. Submitting preferences gives you a better chance of getting your preferred week but does not guarantee it.
🆕
How to Submit Preferences
Visit ssc.gov.in → Login with your registration credentials → Find the "Exam Week Preference" or "Window Preference Submission" link → Rank all 4 windows (1 = most preferred, 4 = least preferred) → Submit. Take a screenshot of the confirmation page for your records.

Complete Selection Process
5-stage process — CBT is first gate — must clear each stage to proceed
1

Stage 1 — Computer-Based Examination (CBE/CBT)

27 April – 30 May 2026 across 4 windows. 80 MCQs, 160 marks, 60 minutes. Sections: General Intelligence, GK, Mathematics, English/Hindi. Negative marking: 0.25 per wrong answer. Approximately 8 times the number of vacancies are shortlisted from CBT to go to PET/PST. Scores are normalised across shifts for fair comparison.

2

Stage 2 — Physical Efficiency Test (PET) — Qualifying

CBT shortlisted candidates appear for PET conducted by CAPFs. Male: 5 km run in 24 minutes. Female: 1.6 km run in 8.5 minutes. Ex-Servicemen are exempted from the race. PET is qualifying in nature — failure means elimination. No marks are awarded.

3

Stage 3 — Physical Standard Test (PST) — Qualifying

Height and chest measurements are verified at the PET/PST venue. Must meet the minimum physical standards specified (see Card 09). Failure in PST leads to elimination. PST is conducted on the same day as PET.

4

Stage 4 — Medical Examination (DME/RME)

Conducted at designated medical authorities for candidates who clear PET/PST. Detailed Medical Examination (DME) covers vision, hearing, general fitness, and absence of any condition likely to interfere with duty performance. Candidates found temporarily unfit can appeal through Review Medical Examination (RME).

5

Stage 5 — Document Verification (DV) & Final Selection

Candidates who clear medical examination are called for Document Verification. All original documents — 10th certificate, domicile, category certificate, NCC certificate (if applicable), Ex-Serviceman document etc. — are verified. Final merit list is prepared force-wise and state-wise based on CBT normalised score, with PET/PST/Medical as qualifying stages.

🎯 Syllabus-Based Preparation Tips
  • Reasoning: Practice 20–30 questions daily — Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, and Series are consistently high-scoring topics
  • GK: Read one national newspaper daily for current affairs. Focus on last 6 months. Defence + Science + Awards sections are must-prepare areas for SSC GD specifically
  • Maths: Master Percentage, Profit-Loss, Time-Work, and SI/CI — these 4 topics alone typically cover 50–60% of Maths questions in SSC GD
  • English/Hindi: Choose the language you are stronger in. Synonyms, Antonyms, Fill in the Blanks, and Error Detection are the highest-weightage topics
  • Negative marking (0.25): Avoid random guessing — skip questions you are less than 60% confident about. Score of 110–130+ (normalised) is typically needed for safe shortlisting
  • The exam is available in 15 languages including regional languages — choose your strongest language for the language section and for reading comprehension
