- Must be a regular full-time course — distance learning, correspondence, or part-time Mining Engineering degrees are NOT considered
- Minimum marks requirement:
- General (UR) / OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) / EWS candidates: Minimum 60% aggregate marks
- SC / ST candidates: Minimum 55% aggregate marks (5% relaxation from the 60% minimum)
- Candidates who have passed their final semester examination on or before the cut-off date (closing date: 07 June 2026) are eligible — result awaiting candidates who have appeared are also eligible provisionally, subject to meeting marks criterion later
- Where marks are in CGPA/GPA/CPI format: Conversion to percentage certificate issued by the University/Institute must be attached without fail. Self-calculation of CGPA to percentage is NOT accepted
- In case of dispute about any qualification's admissibility, the decision of the Chairman, Coal India Limited is final
- Candidates must have qualified GATE-2025 with the MN (Mining Engineering) paper code
- ONLY GATE-2025 score is valid. GATE scores from GATE-2024, GATE-2026, or any other year prior to or after GATE-2025 are explicitly invalid and will not be considered under any circumstances
- Applications without a valid GATE-2025 MN score will be rejected summarily
- The GATE-2025 score is used for shortlisting candidates at a 1:3 ratio (3 candidates shortlisted per vacancy, category-wise) — it is NOT the final merit basis by itself
- Final merit list for selection is also prepared based on GATE-2025 scores/marks
- Only Indian Nationals are eligible to apply
- All qualifications must be recognised by AICTE / UGC / appropriate Indian statutory authorities
- Candidates working in Government / PSU / Autonomous bodies must either: (a) apply through proper channel, OR (b) submit a valid NOC at the time of DV & IME, OR (c) furnish a proper relieving order at joining. Transfer of service benefit including bond transfer follows DPE guidelines
- Candidates must have a valid email ID and mobile number active for at least 1 year — all communications are through registered email only. No request for change of email/phone accepted
- Crucial date for age calculation is 30 April 2026 — NOT the application closing date (07 June 2026)
- Maximum age cap: The upper age limit is relaxed subject to the condition that the maximum age of any applicant as on 30 April 2026 shall not exceed 56 years — this applies to departmental candidates of CIL and its subsidiaries who have no age bar otherwise
- Departmental candidates (employees of Coal India Limited or its subsidiary companies applying online) have no age limit restriction and are also exempt from application fee
- Ex-Servicemen (ESM): Relaxation as per extant Government of India guidelines; reservation for ESM is on horizontal basis (overlay, not separate category)
- J&K domicile relaxation applies to candidates who were domicile of J&K during the period 01.01.1980 to 31.12.1989 as per GoI guidelines
Every selected candidate must execute a service agreement bond of ₹3 Lakhs (Rupees Three Lakhs) plus applicable GST at the time of joining Coal India Limited. The bond mandates a minimum service period of 60 months (5 years) from the date of joining. A deduction of ₹5,000 per month will be made from the candidate's salary towards this bond amount. This ₹5,000/month deduction is made until the bond amount (excluding GST) is recovered, and the accumulated amount is refunded without interest after the successful completion of 60 months of continuous service. Candidates who leave CIL before completing 60 months are liable to pay the outstanding bond amount in full. This bond reflects the significant training investment CIL makes in each Management Trainee during the 1-year training-cum-probation period. 📌
- Only candidates who have qualified GATE-2025 with the MN (Mining Engineering) paper are considered
- Candidates are shortlisted category-wise in the ratio of 1:3 (3 candidates called per vacancy) in order of merit of their GATE-2025 scores
- Tie-breaking rule (when two candidates have identical GATE-2025 scores):
- First: Candidate with higher percentage marks / CGPA in minimum eligible qualification (Mining Engineering degree) is ranked higher
- If still tied: Candidate who is senior in age is ranked higher
- The final merit list for selection is also prepared discipline-wise on the basis of GATE-2025 scores/marks — there is no written test or interview by CIL
- Original educational certificates (degree, marksheets, GATE scorecard)
- Age proof (Matriculation/Secondary Board certificate)
- Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS) in prescribed format with valid dates
- J&K domicile certificate if claiming that relaxation
- Ex-servicemen: Discharge / Service Certificate
- NOC from current employer (if employed in Govt/PSU/Autonomous body)
- University-issued CGPA to percentage conversion certificate (if applicable)
- Medical examination follows CIL's Medical Attendance Rules — available on CIL's website for reference
- The decision of the Medical Committee is final and binding
- Candidates are strongly advised to go through CIL's Medical Attendance Rules before applying and ensure they meet the physical/medical standard
- Given that MTs are posted in mining operations, the medical standards include fitness for underground and surface mining environments
- Offer of appointment issued; candidates execute service agreement bond of ₹3L + GST
- Candidates join as Management Trainee in E-1 Grade for a 1-year training-cum-probation period
- Training is conducted at various CIL mining training institutes and subsidiaries
- Monthly deduction of ₹5,000 towards service bond begins from joining date
- On successful and satisfactory completion of 1-year training-cum-probation, service is confirmed as Officer (Mining) in E-1 Grade — a Group A executive post
- Character and antecedent verification by prescribed authorities follows appointment; candidature is cancelled if any discrepancy or suppression is found
- Application fee payment is through online mode only — no offline payment, demand draft, or cash payment accepted
- Fee once paid will not be refunded under any circumstances — even if the application is rejected or the candidate is found ineligible after payment
- CIL will not be responsible if a candidate deposits fee in any wrong account — verify the payment gateway carefully
- OBC (Creamy Layer) candidates are NOT entitled to OBC-NCL concession — they must apply and pay as General (UR) category candidates
- CIL does not seek any other charges or fees beyond the application fee mentioned above — beware of fraud
- Do not respond to unscrupulous advertisements in newspapers — verify authenticity only at coalindia.in

Coal India Limited is the world's single largest coal-producing company, contributing approximately 75% of India's total coal production. It employs approximately 2.12 lakh people. Here is an honest analysis for GATE-2025 Mining Engineering candidates:
- E-1 Grade with ₹60,000 basic pay is among the highest starting salaries for fresh Mining engineers in the Central PSU sector. With IDA-linked DA (currently above 55%), HRA, PRP, and cafeteria allowances, gross salary comfortably exceeds ₹1.2–₹1.5 lakh/month at entry
- Coal India is a Maharatna company — one of only 14 such PSUs in India. The brand value and job security are equivalent to the finest government jobs
- No interview in the selection process — final merit is based purely on GATE-2025 score, eliminating subjective bias
- Career progression in CIL is well-defined: E-1 → E-2 → E-3 → E-4 → E-5 → E-6 → E-7 → E-8. Officers regularly reach E-5/E-6 level (equivalent to Rs. 1,00,000–1,60,000 basic) within 15–18 years
- CIL's EDCPS pension scheme, CMPF, and gratuity provide strong retirement security
- Township housing at coalfield sites significantly reduces effective living costs — most family expenses are subsidised
- For Mining Engineering graduates, CIL is arguably the single most prestigious and well-paying employer in India
- 60-month (5-year) service bond of ₹3L + GST is a real financial commitment — leaving before 5 years means paying the outstanding bond in a lump sum
- Postings are at coalfield areas (Dhanbad, Ranchi, Bilaspur, Singrauli, Nagpur, Sambalpur etc.) — primarily semi-urban or remote locations. Urban lifestyle preferences are incompatible with this career
- Mining work involves physical fieldwork in underground/opencast mines, requiring robust health and safety compliance. Not a desk-based career
- Only GATE-2025 MN score is valid — candidates who appeared in GATE-2024 or earlier (or have GATE-2026 score) are completely ineligible for this recruitment cycle
- CIL's coal business faces long-term transition risk as India's energy mix gradually includes more renewables — though coal will remain dominant for decades given India's energy security needs
- Application fee of ₹1,180 is non-refundable even if found ineligible later — verify eligibility thoroughly before paying
Our verdict: For Mining Engineering graduates with a valid GATE-2025 MN score, this is the single most important recruitment notification to apply for in 2026. Coal India MT (Mining) combines the highest entry-level salary in the mining PSU sector, a Maharatna employer's brand and career security, a no-interview transparent selection process, and access to one of India's most technically rich mining environments. The 276 vacancies represent a large pool — but competition from India's top Mining Engineering graduates from ISM Dhanbad, IIT BHU, NIT Raipur, and other premier institutions will be intense. Apply, and begin interview/DV preparation immediately. 📌
With 276 vacancies and a 1:3 shortlisting ratio, approximately 828 candidates will be called for DV+IME. Here is how to assess your chances:
- General/UR (114 vacancies): Approximately 342 candidates shortlisted. Expected GATE-2025 MN cut-off for UR: likely 60–70 marks range (out of 100), depending on exam difficulty and candidate pool. Historical CIL MT Mining UR cut-offs range from 55–72 GATE marks
- EWS (27 vacancies): ~81 candidates shortlisted. EWS cut-off typically 5–8 marks below UR
- OBC-NCL (74 vacancies): ~222 candidates shortlisted. OBC cut-off typically 8–12 marks below UR
- SC (41 vacancies): ~123 candidates shortlisted. SC cut-off typically 20–25 marks below UR
- ST (20 vacancies): ~60 candidates shortlisted. ST cut-off typically 25–30 marks below UR
- Document completeness is paramount: Every missing or incorrect document at DV results in cancellation despite a strong GATE score. Start collecting original certificates now
- CGPA conversion certificate: The most commonly missed document. If your Mining Engineering degree is in CGPA/GPA format, obtain the official percentage conversion certificate from your university registrar BEFORE the DV date — this can take 2–4 weeks to process
- OBC-NCL certificate: Must be issued on or after 01.04.2026. Older certificates are invalid. Check your caste name exactly matches the Central List spelling
- EWS certificate: Based on FY 2025-26 family income, valid for 2026-27. Must be issued by District Magistrate/Revenue Officer/Tehsildar level authority in prescribed format
- Mining degree from valid institution: Must be from AICTE/UGC-recognised university, regular full-time course. Keep all semester marksheets organised sequentially
- Vision: Candidates must have adequate visual acuity — typically 6/12 corrected in the better eye, with normal colour vision (colour blindness is typically disqualifying for underground mining roles)
- Hearing: Normal hearing in both ears — audiometric testing is standard
- Respiratory health: Chest X-ray and spirometry often required — history of severe asthma or COPD may be disqualifying for underground mine work
- General fitness: No chronic conditions that impair duty in mining environments (heart disease, uncontrolled diabetes, orthopedic impairments affecting mobility in mine access)
- CIL Medical Attendance Rules are available on coalindia.in — candidates are strongly advised to review them and assess personal fitness BEFORE applying
