🔍 Why DEO Cut-Off Is Much Higher Than LDC/JSA
  • Fewer vacancies: DEO posts have significantly fewer vacancies than LDC/JSA, making competition per seat much higher.
  • Science stream additional filter: DEO Science Stream requires Class 12 with Science subjects — further limiting eligible candidates but increasing per-seat competition among qualified applicants.
  • Higher shortlisting ratio: SSC shortlists more candidates relative to vacancies for LDC/JSA (due to higher attrition) — this lowers the LDC/JSA cut-off relative to DEO.
  • Normalization impact: DEO applicants tend to be a more academically focused subset — pushing the normalised cut-off upward.

ℹ️ Cut-off trend analysis: The 2025 LDC/JSA UR cut-off (144.25) is lower than 2024 (157.36) and 2023 (153.91), suggesting the Tier 1 paper was moderately difficult this cycle or fewer candidates attempted challenging questions across shifts. Normalisation across 19 days of exam ensures fair scoring regardless of shift difficulty.
05
How SSC CHSL Marks Are Calculated — Normalisation Explained

Because the SSC CHSL Tier 1 exam is conducted across multiple shifts over 19 days, different shifts may have different difficulty levels. To ensure fairness, SSC uses a normalisation process to adjust raw scores.

Normalised Score = Raw Score × (Average Marks of Top 0.1% in all shifts ÷ Average Marks of Top 0.1% in candidate's shift)
Normalisation compensates for shift difficulty — candidates in harder shifts receive adjusted higher scores
📐 Normalisation — Key Facts Every Candidate Must Know
  • Why normalisation: If a morning shift had harder questions than an evening shift, raw marks comparison would be unfair. Normalisation corrects this by benchmarking all shifts against a common standard.
  • Top 0.1% benchmark: SSC uses the performance of the top 0.1% of candidates in each shift as the reference point. A harder shift will have a lower benchmark — so candidates in that shift get a proportional upward adjustment.
  • Marks computed to 5 decimal places: Normalised marks are computed to 5 decimal places (e.g., 144.25858) to avoid ties as much as possible.
  • Negative marking applies to raw score: The raw score first deducts 0.50 marks per wrong answer (each correct answer = 2 marks, maximum raw = 200). Normalisation is then applied to this raw score.
  • Normalised score can exceed raw score: If you were in a harder shift, your normalised score may be higher than your raw score — and vice versa for easier shifts.
  • Scorecard shows both: Your individual scorecard (download via ssc.gov.in login) shows your section-wise raw marks AND the normalised total used for cut-off comparison.
  • Final answer key effect: Any changes made to the answer key after the objection window (Final Answer Key: 19 March 2026) are incorporated into the raw score before normalisation. If a question was deleted, all candidates get full marks for it.

🎯 SSC CHSL Tier 2 Preparation Strategy — Shortlisted Candidates
  • Section-I (Maths + Reasoning — 180 marks): This section contributes the most to your final rank. Prioritise — Practice arithmetic, simplification, percentage, algebra, and ratio daily. For Reasoning, master coding-decoding, series, matrix, blood relations, and direction problems.
  • Section-II (English + GA — 180 marks): English accounts for 120 marks in Tier 2 — more than Tier 1. Focus on Reading Comprehension, Cloze Test, Error Detection, Para Jumbles, and one-word substitution. For GA, focus on static GK and current affairs from November 2025 onwards.
  • Section-III (CKT + Typing — Qualifying): The Computer Knowledge Test (15 questions, qualifying) and Typing Test/DEST are pass/fail — not merit-based. Ensure you practice typing to meet the 35 wpm (English) or 30 wpm (Hindi) or 8,000 KDPH (DEO) requirements.
  • Minimum qualifying marks in Tier 2: Candidates must score a minimum of 33% in Sections I and II to be eligible for the Typing/Skill Test stage — do not neglect this threshold.
  • Time management is critical: Tier 2 has strict sectional timing. Practice full mock tests under timed conditions to build speed and accuracy across both sections simultaneously.
  • Do not ignore negative marking: Each wrong answer deducts 1 mark in Tier 2 (3 marks per correct answer). Attempt questions only when you are reasonably sure — random guessing can cost you your rank.

Q6
What is SSC CHSL normalisation and how does it affect my marks?
+
SSC CHSL Tier 1 was conducted in multiple shifts over 19 days (12–30 November 2025). Different shifts may have had different difficulty levels. To ensure fairness, SSC applies normalisation:

Formula: Normalised Score = Raw Score × (Avg. marks of top 0.1% in all shifts ÷ Avg. marks of top 0.1% in your shift)

Effect: If your shift was harder than average, your normalised score will be higher than your raw score. If your shift was easier, it may be lower. This balances the competition across all shifts.

Key points: Marks are computed to 5 decimal places. Your scorecard shows both raw and normalised scores. The cut-off comparison is always against normalised marks. Negative marking (−0.50 per wrong) applies to raw marks before normalisation.
Q7
My roll number is not in the SSC CHSL Tier 1 result. What should I do?
+
If your roll number does not appear in the SSC CHSL 2025 Tier 1 result PDFs, it means your normalised score was below the cut-off for your category and post.

Steps you should take:
1. Download your scorecard via ssc.gov.in login and check your section-wise and total normalised marks
2. Compare your score with the official cut-off for your category (UR/OBC/SC/ST/EWS) and post (LDC/JSA or DEO)
3. Check the Final Answer Key (19 March 2026) — if any corrections benefit you, your marks should reflect them
4. If you believe there is an error, contact SSC regional office with your roll number and details
5. Start preparing for the next CHSL cycle — SSC releases CHSL notification annually. Identify weak sections and build on them for the next attempt.
Q8
Is SSC CHSL Tier 1 qualifying? Does it add to final merit?
+
Yes — SSC CHSL Tier 1 is qualifying in nature only. Your Tier 1 marks do NOT contribute to the final merit list.

The final merit list and appointment are determined entirely by Tier 2 performance (Section I and Section II — 360 marks total). Tier 1 only determines who is eligible to appear for Tier 2.

This means: Even if you barely cleared the Tier 1 cut-off, you can still outperform candidates who scored very high in Tier 1 — by scoring better in Tier 2. Similarly, a high Tier 1 score provides no advantage in the final merit calculation.

Tier 2 qualifying requirement: Minimum 33% marks in Sections I and II are required to remain eligible for the Typing Test/DEST stage. The Typing Test and CKT (Computer Knowledge Test) are qualifying — they do not add marks to the final merit list.
