7-Stage Selection Process
Final merit based solely on Music Ability Test (MAT) — musical skill determines your selection
1

Stage 1 — Shortlisting via Matriculation Marks + Music Certificates

Candidates are shortlisted on an All India merit basis using their 10th board marks. Only candidates with valid music certificates (Degree / Diploma / Grade / Certificate of Competitions) are considered for shortlisting. Candidates without music certificates are eliminated at this stage regardless of academic scores. Shortlisted candidates receive a call-up letter for the recruitment process.

2

Stage 2 — Physical Fitness Test (PFT) — Qualifying

Shortlisted candidates undergo the Physical Fitness Test (PFT). Standards differ for male and female candidates (see Card 05 above). PFT is a qualifying test only — it is not scored for merit. Only candidates who pass PFT proceed to the Written Examination. PFT is conducted at designated Indian Navy recruitment centres.

3

Stage 3 — Written Examination (Qualifying)

50 multiple-choice questions carrying 50 marks. Duration: 30 minutes. Bilingual — Hindi and English. Syllabus: Science, Mathematics, and General Awareness at Class 10 level. Minimum qualifying marks: 25% (13 marks out of 50). Candidates must also clear individual section minimums. Written exam is qualifying only — marks are not added to final merit. There is negative marking: 0.25 marks per wrong answer.

4

Stage 4 — Music Ability Test (MAT) — ★ Final Merit Based on This

The Music Ability Test (MAT) is the most critical stage and the sole basis for the final All India merit list. The MAT comprehensively evaluates: vocal ability (singing one complete song), instrument proficiency (practical skill, tuning, sight reading), matching unknown notes, prepared piece performance, Scale/Raaga/Taala performance, and basic music theory knowledge. Only candidates who pass PFT and Written Exam qualify for MAT.

5

Stage 5 — Recruitment Medical Examination

Candidates qualifying MAT undergo a Recruitment Medical Examination conducted by authorised military doctors at designated Military Hospitals. Medical standards cover height, weight, vision, colour perception, chest expansion, and overall fitness. Candidates found medically unfit can appeal within 5 days at the designated Military Hospital. No second review is permitted after the appeal medical.

6

Stage 6 — Pre-Enrolment Medicals at INS Chilka, Odisha

All selected candidates must report to INS Chilka, Odisha for final pre-enrolment medical examination before joining. Induction is subject to qualifying this medical. Candidates who fail this final medical are not enrolled. No call for the next batch is issued to such candidates.

7

Stage 7 — Final Merit List (All India) & Appointment

The final merit list is prepared on an All India basis based solely on MAT performance. Published on the candidate dashboard and joinindiannavy.gov.in by early July 2026. Selected candidates commence training at INS Chilka, Odisha in July 2026 as Agniveer (Musician) under the Agnipath Scheme.

13
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything candidates want to know about Navy Agniveer MR Musician 02/2026
Who can apply for Indian Navy Agniveer MR Musician 02/2026?+
Unmarried male and unmarried female Indian citizens born between 01 July 2004 and 31 December 2008 (both dates inclusive) who have passed Matriculation (10th) with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and possess valid musical proficiency certificates are eligible. No age relaxation for any category. No married candidates.
Is there any application fee for Indian Navy Agniveer Musician 2026?+
No application fee when applying directly at joinindiannavy.gov.in. Candidates applying through Common Service Centres (CSC) may pay a CSC service charge of approximately ₹60 + GST — this is the CSC operator's fee, not an Indian Navy charge. Always apply directly through the official Navy website to avoid any charges.
What is the Music Ability Test (MAT) and how important is it?+
The Music Ability Test (MAT) is the sole basis for the final All India merit list and determines who gets selected. It tests: vocal ability (tempo, pitch, complete song), practical instrument skill, tuning, matching unknown notes, prepared piece, sight reading of notation, Scale/Raaga/Taala performance, and basic music theory. Qualifying PFT and Written Exam are prerequisites to reach MAT, but MAT performance alone creates the merit ranking.
Can a drummer or tabla player apply for Indian Navy Musician recruitment?+
It depends on the specific instrument. Tabla (which has definite pitch) may be eligible, but Jazz drum set, snare drum, bass drum, side drums, and cymbals (all indefinite pitch percussion) are explicitly ineligible. Monotone instruments and non-chromatic instruments like bugle are also ineligible. When in doubt, candidates should refer to the official notification PDF or contact the Indian Navy directly for clarification.
What happens after 4 years in the Navy as an Agniveer Musician?+
After 4 years: (1) Receive Seva Nidhi of approximately ₹10.04 lakh (tax-exempt). (2) Top 25% of performers may be retained in the Regular Indian Navy on merit. (3) Those not retained are released from service. Agniveers are NOT eligible for pension, gratuity, or Ex-Serviceman status. A certificate of service is provided for use in civilian career paths.
I play Western guitar — am I eligible for Indian Navy Musician recruitment?+
Yes. Guitar is a String instrument with definite pitch and is explicitly eligible. You must demonstrate proficiency including sight reading of Staff notation, prepared piece, tuning, and matching unknown notes. For Western music, a certificate from an international board like Trinity College of Music (London) or Royal School of Music (London) strengthens your shortlisting significantly.
What is the training schedule for 02/2026 Batch?+
Training for the 02/2026 batch commences in July 2026 at INS Chilka, Odisha. INS Chilka is the primary naval training establishment for all sailor entries. Training covers naval discipline, seamanship, physical standards, and specialised musician duties with the Navy Band. Selected candidates must report to INS Chilka for pre-enrolment medicals before joining.
Will the PFT be the same for male and female candidates?+
No. There are separate standards. Male: 1.6 km run in 6 min 30 sec, 20 squats, 15 push-ups, 15 sit-ups. Female: 1.6 km run in 8 minutes, 15 squats, 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups. PFT is qualifying only — it does not contribute to merit.
I have a tattoo on my wrist — am I eligible?+
The tattoo policy permits permanent tattoos on the inner face of the forearm (from inside elbow to the wrist) and the back (dorsal) side of the hand. The wrist area falls within the permitted zone (forearm inner face). Tattoos on the face, neck, chest, back, legs, outer forearm, or palm are not permitted. When in doubt, verify from the official notification before applying.
Is there a negative marking in the written exam?+
Yes — there is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer. The exam has 50 questions worth 50 marks. Minimum qualifying score is 25% (approximately 13 marks overall) along with section minimums. Since the written exam is qualifying only, avoid random guessing and attempt only questions you are confident about.
