Practice with sectional timers during your preparation — don't get stuck on one difficult question and lose time for easier ones.

- Sectional timing is the game-changer: With 15 minutes per section, you have just 36 seconds per question. Speed + accuracy simultaneously is the core skill. Practice sectional timed mock tests from Day 1.
- GK is the equaliser: 25 questions of GK are the same difficulty regardless of post level. A strong GK score can compensate for relative weakness in Quant or Reasoning. Read one newspaper daily.
- Negative marking discipline: –0.50 per wrong answer means 4 wrong answers = –2 marks = cost of 1 correct answer. Never guess blindly. Skip questions you are less than 60% sure about.
- English at Grade 8–10 level: For 10th/12th posts, English questions are NCERT-level. Study basic grammar rules thoroughly. Vocabulary from any standard list of 500–1000 words covers most SSC Selection Post questions.
- Previous year papers are your bible: SSC repeats question types heavily. Solve the last 5 years of SSC Selection Post papers — you will see recurring patterns in all 4 sections.
- Shortlisting ratio is 1:15 or 1:30: If vacancies are ≤5, top 30 per vacancy are called for DV. If >5, top 15 per vacancy. With 3,003 vacancies, most posts will use 1:15 — about 45,000 candidates will be shortlisted across all posts. Strong CBT performance is essential.
Stage 1 — Computer-Based Test (CBT) — Merit Determining Stage
A single-stage Computer-Based Test with 100 objective MCQ questions, 200 marks, 60 minutes. Four sections of 25 questions each (GI Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, English Comprehension) with 15 minutes per section fixed timing. Negative marking of –0.50 marks per wrong answer. If conducted in multiple shifts, SSC will apply normalisation. Final merit is based 100% on CBT marks. No interview.
Stage 2 — Skill Test (Qualifying — for Certain Posts Only)
A Skill Test (Typing Test / Data Entry Skill Test / Computer Proficiency Test) is conducted only for specific posts where it is prescribed in the essential qualification. The Skill Test is qualifying in nature — it adds no marks to the merit list. Failing the skill test disqualifies the candidate regardless of CBT score. Candidates applying for posts requiring typing/DEO skills must begin speed practice immediately. Check the official notification for which posts have a skill test.
Stage 3 — Document Verification (DV)
Candidates shortlisted from the CBT (in the ratio of 1:30 for ≤5 vacancies or 1:15 for >5 vacancies, subject to a minimum of 150 candidates) are called for Document Verification. Original educational certificates, age proof, category certificate, and any other required documents must be produced. Any discrepancy or false information leads to disqualification at this stage. For PwBD and ESM candidates, all qualifying candidates who meet the minimum cut-off may be called for DV.
Candidates who qualify in the CBT must upload all required documents on the SSC portal — failure to do so results in summary rejection of candidature. SSC conducts initial scrutiny based on information in the application form — detailed scrutiny is done by the User Department at the time of DV. Each application is accepted provisionally — accuracy of information determines final eligibility.
