Computer Based Test (CBT) — Exam Pattern:
| Section | Topic | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section A | General Awareness & Aptitude | 20 | 20 |
| Section B | Technical Knowledge (post-specific — Electrical Engineering topics) | 80 | 80 |
| Total | 100 | 100 | |
Minimum Qualifying Marks in CBT:
Stage 1 — Computer Based Test (CBT)
The sole merit-determining stage — 100 objective MCQ questions for 100 marks in 90 minutes. Section A covers General Awareness and Aptitude (20 marks). Section B covers Technical Knowledge specific to the post — Electrical Engineering fundamentals, Mines Electricity Rules, and trade concepts (80 marks). No negative marking — attempt all 100 questions. Exam is bilingual. CBT schedule and admit card announced at mahanadicoal.in in due course.
Stage 2 — Document Verification (DV)
Candidates shortlisted in a 1:3 ratio based on CBT merit are called for DV. Tie-breaking: Date of Birth (elder candidate first), then alphabetical by name. Original certificates of Class X, Diploma/Degree/ITI, caste certificate, EWS certificate (if applicable), LT Permit / Mining Parts Permit (mandatory for Technician post), PwBD certificate (if applicable), ESM discharge certificate (if applicable), and photo ID must be presented. Any discrepancy or missing document leads to disqualification.
Stage 3 — Initial Medical Examination (IME)
DV-cleared candidates undergo a medical fitness examination by MCL's company doctors — their findings are final and cannot be appealed. Minimum height for Asst. Foreman: 60 inches (5 feet) except Dwarfism cases. Candidates found medically unfit are disqualified. Appointment is provisional until medical fitness is confirmed. Candidates with pre-existing medical conditions should verify fitness before applying.
Stage 4 — Provisional Select List & Appointment
The Provisional Select List is published on mahanadicoal.in after all stages. Appointment offer issued based on merit list position and Government of India reservation policy. Merit panel is valid for 1 year. Selected candidates may be posted anywhere in MCL/CIL mines and projects — including underground and opencast mines across Odisha. Shift duties and field assignments are part of the role.
- Electrical Engineering fundamentals: DC/AC circuits, transformers, induction motors, power systems, electrical machines — revise full AICTE Diploma syllabus for all 3 years
- Mines Electricity Rules: MCL operates coal mines — CBT specifically covers Mines Act 1952, Indian Electricity Rules, DGMS safety standards, Coal Mines Regulations, earthing systems, protection devices, voltage categories in mines, winding engines, and electrical substations
- No negative marking — strategic advantage: Never leave any question blank. After genuine attempts, guess remaining answers before time runs out — wrong answers carry zero penalty
- Section A (20 marks): Current affairs (last 6 months), GK, logical reasoning, number series — do not neglect; even 3–4 extra marks here separates hundreds of candidates in a 500-seat competition
- Previous CIL subsidiary papers: MCL, SECL, NCL, CCL — all follow near-identical CBT patterns for E&M posts. Solve previous SECL 2024 and NCL 2025 Asst. Foreman papers — directly applicable to MCL 2026
